I bought an intel X25-M SSD last week and it does make a *big* difference! It is faster, develops less noise and heat and the battery lasts longer.
I am using it with a lenovo thinkpad t410 laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 and it’s just great!
For what it’s worth I am running a pretty recent kernel in conjunction with the Ubuntu maverick userland. Not sure how well the normal 2.6.35 kernel supports SSDs.
Anyway, SSDs are the way to go

uff I added an SSD (OCZ Vertex 2) to my old PC (hp dc7100 sff, already 5-6 years old) and it ROCKS. Finally I see the processor usage going to 100%. Otherwise it was always wrr wrr wrr of the disk plate.
and applications start now like they should! click and bang! there it is

Intel SSDs are awesome. At last I can freely use recursive greps over large codebases without having to go make a cup of coffee.

I love them, best upgrade investment I got in my macbook. Everything is snappier and faster!
